Editorial Reviews for  'Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router'

Product Description
Wireless-G is the 54Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country - but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment.Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow. The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. With the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

Customer Reviews for  'Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router'

Adequate for the most part
I have owned this router for about a year and it usually works. I do have problems with it not allowing me on the internet at times. The only way I can fix it is to perform a hard re-boot by pressing in the reset button for 10 seconds. When I do this I have to re-enter in all my security info.
I don't have problems other than that. It does have the capability to block out certain web sites.
Overall, this isn't a bad unit, though I am in the market for another because of the frustration I am having with locking out the internet.

Linksys WRT54G review
1. Hassle free and easy to install
2. Was able to configure and use in 2 minutes after hookup.
3. Reception has been quite good given the fact that I live in a pre-fab house whose walls are made of concrete and rebar.
4. Would recommend to anyone.

Works great, but Needs better Manual
Once set up, this has worked flawlessly. I have used several brands of routers in the past but all wired configs. This one is my first wireless. Once I figured out my set up, which I had to ask a friend with the same model, it worked/works flawlessly. They need a better manual. The set up wizard was OK but didn't address my particular situation. I would still recommend to anyone, however, despite my set up issues.

Works Great after I figured it out
This product works great after I read through the reviews and figured out how to fix my connectivity problem. When I first plugged in this router it would not connect to the internet. The problem was that my dsl provider assigned IP addresses started with 192.168.1.xxx and the router does too, and this results in no connectivity. To change this, I had to enter the router manually through firefox by entering its IP, 192.168.1.1 and change the default IP to 192.168.2.1. I saved the change and it works! It's been on constantly now for over a month, and I've had no dropped signal, and no resets needed. Although it didn't immediately just work, unlike all the Apple products I've spoiled myself with, I like this router.

This product works perfectly !!
This router worked without a hitch the as soon as I connected it which didn't take long!
It has continued to work perfectly in the background ever since.
What more can I ask for.
